Item Analysing the outcome of commuters’ exposure to digital billboards located in Dar es Salaam city, Tanzania(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Sembosi, Abihudi SemotineThe main aim of this survey study was to use the information-processing model (IPM) to elaborate and clarify whether the ways in which commuters process information on the digital billboards had an impact on shaping the public’s decision-to purchase products. This aim was operationalized to examine: the steps in which the commuters process the information; similarities and differences in processing the information among the commuters; and the relationship between commuters’ actions and the information they processed. The study employed the techniques of quantitative design to collect data from 120 commuters on the Ali Hassan Mwinyi-Road in Dar es Salaam City, which were obtained through random systematic sampling. The study found that respondents follow the pattern of six steps in the information-processing model. However, some steps are better processed than others and the commuters process the information on digital billboards in different ways. It was also noted that information processing alone is unlikely to turn commuters into become active consumers of those products and services that are advertised on the digital billboards. Nonetheless, the six steps of the information-processing model still provide a blueprint in designing digital billboard advertisements. The study further recommends that in designing the content on the digital billboard, it is imperative to address psychological, physical and emotional needs as well as the behavioural patterns of the general public. Also, there is a need to apply a media mix to channel the same advert that appears on digital billboard to other media, such as social media, televisions, radio or newspaper.Item Analysis of external communication in enhancing awareness of public enterprises: a case of the ministry of information, youth, culture and sports(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Lwoga, Freddy EdwinThe aim of this study is to analyze External Communication in Enhancing Awareness of Public Enterprises with the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports as case study. The study revealed that the government lacked the capacity to communicate with the key constituencies (the general public, victims and key stakeholders). This limited the effectiveness and efficiency of communication in all phases of risk management, particularly in the advance warning phase. However, it was interesting to note that there was a high level of commitment developed during the intervention phase between non-state actors and the affected communities. For the effectiveness of the proposed risk communication framework, there is a need to enhance communications mechanisms such as an integration of mass media, social media and interpersonal communication, underpinned by clear policies and buttressed by the political will. It is also critical to build the capacity of local authorities and community leaders toward engaging the public in all phases of disaster management.Item Assessment of amateur journalists in observing journalism professional standards: A case of Clouds Media Group, Dar es Salaam,(University of Dar es Salaam, 2019) Saadan, WardaThis study aimed at assessing amateur journalists in observing professional standards. Intensive interviews provided valuable information, especially for the second and third research questions on determining the percentage of African and foreign programmes aired, and the most sponsored programmes in the media industry. The study found that entertainment programmes are the most favoured at the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, compared to other programmes on health, religion and education. Music, football, soap operas and films take up more time than the news and developmental programming that helps the community in poverty eradication. The study findings revealed that foreign programmes are more favoured than local ones. Recommendations suggest that as the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation is a public service broadcaster, the organisation should consider appropriate styles of journalism that will serve diverse groups of ordinary people in the community, in addition to producing and broadcasting local programmes. Furthermore, the Corporation, in collaboration with government, should focus on specialisation by targeting reportage to the developing sectors in the country, such as the nascent extractive sector in Tanzania, as well as to tourism and agriculture, which are the mainstay of the country’s economy.Item An assessment of internal communication strategy in strengthening an organization: a case of energy and water utilities regulatory authority (EWURA)(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Sanga, FrederickThis study assessed the internal communication strategy in strengthening the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA).With a view of identifying the existing internal communication practices, and to investigate the internal communication strategy implementation in determining the organization activities. Habari Leo by 30.60% was behind Mwananchi by 57.7% for publishing objectively sourced news stories. The findings also indicate news sourcing in main sources, age wise, gender wise and places of story origin; subjectivity was detected in the assessed hard news articles. Though some political news stories were commendable as they represented sources’ viewpoints, at large media parroted voices from sources with only simple analysis, lacked own initiatives and thus missed to present issues over politicians. Challenges facing delivery of civic education include the pressure to cover marketable news and high cost of running private media houses. The study concluded that in Tanzania reporting of civic education is constrained by poor focus of topics, target group and low prioritization.
