Factors influencing performance of logistics in transporting industry in Tanzania

The overall objective of this study was to analyze Factors Influencing Performance of Logistics in Transporting Industry in Tanzania; special attention is drawn in Dar es Salaam city. The study used in-depth interviews to collect all the data from five companies. The data was collected for the purpose of getting first-hand information by hearing the responses from the respondents themselves.The analysis was done through within case and cross case analyses. In within case each company through the representative or director was interviewed and provided answers accordingly. In the cross case analysis the researcher arranged the answers as per common question from the guiding questions. Finally, the researcher analyzed the answers in a ratio form by using Pie charts which presented the percentage of the factor and how it contributed in performance of logistics industry in Tanzania. Three main factors which influence the performance of logistics industry in Tanzania were identified in this study which are; poor road networking which connect Tanzania with neighboring countries like Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Congo, another one is lack of proper infrastructure of Information Technology by companies in monitoring movement of tracks from the point of loading to the point of offloading cargo at the destination and finally is custom clearing goods.The researcher offered a number of suggestions to the government and the companies dealing in logistics regarding the logistics business in Tanzania. The researcher also recommended the an area for further research so as to improve business environment in the country.
