Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the English language teaching and learning in BAKWATA and TAPA secondary schools and find out if there are any specific factors that are contributing to the low performance in the English language subject. The specific objectives of the study were to assess the availability and effectiveness of English teaching and learning materials; to examine teachers competence in using the English language in teaching process in secondary schools; to find the quality of school management and administration and its impact on English performance. This study adopted a case study design, which employed both qualitative and quantitative techniques in data collection. The study was conducted among the four schools which were under the umbrella of BAKWATA and TAPA organizations in Dar es salaam region. Significantly, the study revealed that students law performance in the English performance in English language was contributed by the insufficient teaching and learning materials, poor teaching and learning environment in the classroom; lack of teachers in-service training as well as shortage of English language teachers played part in students poor performance. In order to improve the teaching and leaning of English language in these schools, this study recommends the following: To ensure that teaching materials are available for effective teaching and learning of English language the strategies should be improved by creating conducive school environment and helping teachers to acquire pedagogical skills and knowledge for the teaching of English language. Moreover, good relationship between relationship between teaching staff and among the students are inevitable for effective teaching and learning process.
