HIV preventive behaviours and selected psychosocial competence skills among young people in Magugu community

Abstract
This research investigated HIV preventive behaviors and selected psychosocial competence skills among young people aged 18-30 years in Magugu community. The study sought to determine whether or not there was any relationship between selected psychosocial competence skills and young people’s HIV preventive behaviors. The study also sought to determine whether or not these skills had helped young people to adopt healthy behaviors. The information was collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and documentary review. The study established that there was a significant difference between males and females in making decision on condoms use. Furthermore there was a significant difference between male and female in their ability to influence and convince others to use safe sex as well as to discuss with friends about HIV preventive behaviours. The study also established that young people adherence to HIV preventive behaviours was at a low level with females being in a disadvantage position compared to males. No significant relationship was found between the selected psychosocial competence skills and HIV preventive behaviours except for decision making. a negative significant relationship was found between decision making and consistent use of condoms among male. A negative significant relationship was also found between decision making and abstinence from sex among female. The study indicated that young people`s adoption of healthy behaviours was poor. In view of the findings, it was recommended that preventive efforts should be initiated and supported.
