The study of planned rural settlements in the tropics has exerted a continuing attraction, partly because schemes play an explicit role in population redistribution and in pushing back the spatial margins of existing settlement and partly because they offer a well-documented laboratory for investigation of the dynamics of agricultural modernization and development.
