Item Mathematical modeling of cost-effectiveness of lymphatic filariasis control strategies(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Iddi, Aziza JumaLymphatic filariasis (LF) is a public health problem causing long term disability in the world as considered by world Health Organization (WHO). About 120 million people in tropical and sub-tropical regions are affected. In this study, three models of LF are developed and analyzed with the aim of obtaining insight on effectiveness and cost effectiveness of multi-intervention strategies on controlling LF disease. The study considered the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of Mass Drug Administration (MDA), health education campaigns, treatment and sterile insect Technique (SIT) in reducing the burden of the disease. Analytical methods are employed to establish existence and stability of steady states, while numerical simulations are used to illustrate the analytical results. The model with preventive measures in humans exhibits a backward bifureation. The result suggests that the reproduction number being less than unity is not a sufficient condition for reducing the disease. Furthermore, the study shows that preventive measures and treatment in human and control measures in vectors are potential strategies to reduce the disease. The cost effectiveness analysis of intervention shows that preventive measures in human are the most cost effective and health beneficial for eliminating LF disease. Finally, fitting of the model and prediction of the disease is carried out using real data from Morogoro regional Hospital. Some of the papers, published from this work are attached in the appendix.
