Item The plight of albinos in Tanzania and the role of Sengerema community radio fm, Mwanza(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Bisendo, VeronicaThis study examined Albino killings and the role of Radio Sengerema FM in the fight against Albino killings in Mwanza region, Tanzania. This study used both Qualitative and Quantitative research designs where a combination of methods used to collect data including a standardised questionnaire with both open and closed ended questions, key informant interviews and observations. Fifty men and women participated in this study. These were purposively and randomly selected. Qualitative data was analysed qualitatively and presented in frequency, tables and charts. Quantitative data was analysed using content analysis. Key findings revealed that 100% of the people in Sengerema District have heard about Albino killings (page 45 and 47) and some have even lost their beloved relatives through this method. Findings further revealed that these unwarranted killings are fuelled by myths, beliefs, misconceptions and superstitions such as Albino body parts that they can make them rich. Radio Sengerema FM has played a major role in creating awareness on the plight of Albinos in the Lake Zone through its radio programmes, panel discussions, documentaries, news bulletins, drama and song, press conferences, concerts and village meetings (page 48 and 49). These programmes have empowered and encouraged communities to report any suspected Albino killers around Lake Victoria. The study concludes that Radio Sengerema has made a difference in the region. Therefore, the study recommends that community members should work closely together with community leaders, media, NGOs, and religious leaders in combating Albino killings by reporting suspected killers to relevant authorities. Similarly, it is recommended that more reporters should be assigned to rural areas to ensure albino killings are widely covered and disseminated. Furthermore, the media should expose the names of those found guilty.
