Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the measures for improving the use of visual aids in the teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools in Ilala municipality. Three research objectives were; to investigate the teachers’ use of visual aids, the usefulness of visual aids, and investigate the ways of improving the use of visual aids in teaching and learning of biology. The study utilized a mixed approach with a case study design. The sample comprised 84 respondents who were purposively and randomly selected. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, focus group discussion, and documentary review. The instruments were reviewed by the researcher’s supervisor and fellow master students. Data were analysed through content analysis and frequencies and percentages in order to draw inferences. The findings revealed that teachers seldom used visual aids. The findings also indicated that visual aids were useful in teaching and learning since they facilitated understanding, simplified teaching, and enabled retention of concepts. Visual aids also increased creativity, curiosity, and interest to learn. It was found that proper training of teachers, improvisation, ensured availability, proper methodology, creating conducive environment for use of modern media as well as students’ involvement in the lesson were measures to improve the use of VA. It was recommended that the MoEVT should review the biology syllabus and double session system to improve the teaching of biology subject. Likewise school administration should address seriously the problems of shortage of teaching and learning materials and should motivate and emphasize teachers to use visuals because motivated teachers are able to overcome many constraints associated with the use of visual aids and other teaching and learning materials.
