dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the role of civic education in mobilizing citizens’ participation in community policing, a case study of Ilala District in Dar es Salaam region. This is due to the fact that where there is no security there is also no development. Basides, community policing has been proved to be more sustainable and efficient than traditional policing. The study sample included policy makers, implementers and the citizens who are in one way or another affected. Both qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used. Data collection instruments were questionnaires, in-depth interviews, focus Group Discussions and documentary reviews. The findings reveal that despite the fact that police officers provide awareness to citizens, the awareness has not been enough to mobilise them for community policing. Those who participate in community policing do so in order to be paid. Again some police officers have not yet understood well what community policing is all about. The study recommends to the government to invest in security management system. The government through her security management committee should establish policies and legal framework to provide civic education to the community. That is to ensure that every citizen know his or her rights, duties and responsibility in the community especially concerning promotion of peace and security. | en_US |
