The provision of sex education to primary schools’ female adolescents in Kinondoni municipality

This research work examined the provision of sex education to primary schools female adolescents in Kinondoni Municipality. Specifically, the study was geared towards analyzing the roles parents and^teachers assume in providing female adolescents with sex education, identifying challenges faced by parents and teachers in providing sex education to female adolescents and finally describing the importance of providing sex education to female adolescents. The researcher employed case study design which enabled her to investigate deeply in the forms used by parents and teachers to provide sex education to their female adolescents. The researcher used primary data collected through interview from parents, teachers and female adolescents as well as documentary review which was used as a secondary source. Data collected were, thereafter, thematically analyzed that is identified, and reported patterns (themes) within data. The research found out that parents and teachers employ different forms in providing sex education to their female adolescents. For example, teachers employed forms such as teaching, discussion, storytelling, drama theatre, just to name a few. Parents, on the other hand, used advice giving, media exposure as well as religious doctrines. The roles played in providing sex education to female adolescents were different. Teachers have been teaching female adolescents, advising them to abstain from pre-marital sex as well as offering counseling services to female adolescents. Parents, on the other hand, established friendly environment, teaching life skills, giving reprimand to female adolescents, just to mention a few. However, during the provision of sex education, teachers and parents were faced by different challenges including but not limited to: influence of television watching, reluctance of female adolescents, customs and traditions as well as lack of confidence of female adolescents to their parents. Furthermore, provision of sex education is important to female adolescents because they learn life skills, get self-evaluation, avoid pre-marital sex, just to name a few. Therefore, the study recommends that sex education should ideally start in the home where parents are engaged in with female adolescents as active participants in their developmental process. Therefore, the study concludes that other behaviour actors such as peers, media and professionals (doctors, nurses and psychologists) are needed to work with teachers and parents in the provision of sex education to female adolescents accordingly.
