This study evaluated the implementation of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) in English language teaching in four secondary schools in Korogwe Town Council. The specific objectives were to analyze the level of conceptualization of CBC by teachers in English language, to establish availability of teaching and learning materials used in implementing Competence Based Curriculum, to examine the extent to which teachers in English language were applying CBC in classrooms and to evaluate effectiveness of CBC in English language teaching. The study employed descriptive survey design method using qualitative and quantitative investigations. Data were collected through Interviews, documentary review, observation and questionnaire from teachers, students, heads of schools and Zonal school inspector and were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. Sampling for obtaining schools and respondents involved purposive, simple randomly and stratified random techniques. The study found that teachers’ understanding of CBC in English language teaching has been narrowed down to the extent of affecting its classroom implementation. Teachers did not plan, teach and assess as recommended by CBC. Teaching materials to support interactive teaching and learning were lacking, hence students gained little competence in English language. Further performance of English language in National Form Four Examinations from 2005 to 2011 has not so much improved. The study recommends that the Ministry of education and vocational training (MoEVT), Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE), National Examinations Council in Tanzania (NECTA) as well as other educational stakeholders have to organise in service trainings for teachers in English language from time to time to train teachers in CBC. TIE has to provide textbooks, reference books and teacher’s guide for CBC English language syllabus. In designing the new curriculum, TIE has to ensure that English language teachers and students are taking part in the process.en_US
