Abstract

This study, with the title ‘’The Representation of Tanzania's Society during Ujamaa and the Prediction of Tanzania's Future in Selected Poems from Summons", examined sixteen selected poems from Summons. The objective of this study was to examine how Tanzania's society is represented during Ujamaa in those selected poems. The problem was identified that scholars in Tanzanian literature have paid little attention to poems that represent Ujamaa. They mainly direct their attention to prose. The study intended to fill this gap in Tanzanian literature in English. Using textual analysis for its research methodology and the Marxist approach for its theoretical framework, the dissertation found out that some poets considered Ujamaa as the ideal ideology for the prosperity of the nation. However the poems revealed that Ujamaa departed from its fundamentals. Classes had emerged in this classless society. This manifestation of classes predicted the crumbling of Ujamaa. Some of the poems depicted Ujamaa as autocratic especially through the power of the president over party and state. The study also found out that some poems depicted the intense corruption morally and materially among the political leaders. The current situation of corruption through other secondary sources was shown to commence in this era. Uneven distribution of the national wealth was depicted to be the source of the intense poverty in this socialist society. This poverty was the source of the loss of hope by the people to this political ideology. Generally, this study discovered that the poets through their speaking voices presented a society struggling against any form of classes and exploitation. This struggle is depicted as intense because the country being a socialist was violating its principles hence provoking bitter criticism not only to the political leadership but also to the political ideology (Ujamaa) as well.
