dc.description.abstract | The purpose of . The study was to identify the factors of productivity both internal and external which influenced the performance of the academic staff in research, teaching and consultancy activities, and which helped to explain the reasons as to why some academic staff moved much faster along the academic ladder while others were left lagging behind. The .survey of literature was guided by factors of productivity theory which also provided the study's conceptual framework. Data for the study were collected from University of Dar es Salaam teaching staff which the positions ranked from assistant lecturer-ship to full-professorship and from the Umvers1ty management team. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The sample consisted of 2 41 r respondents of which, 2 17 ( 90.04o/o) w ere males and 24 (9.96%) were females. A total of 17 interviews were conducted. The following were the major findings of the study: On productivity in research; of all the variables studied such as computer accessories, internet services, etc. whose unit changes caused an impact on changes in productivity in research of academic staff, a unit change in academic qualifications followed by a unit change in an access to internet services had the greatest impact. On productivity in teaching; of all the variables studied such as textbooks, laboratory facilities, students teacher ratio, academic qualifications, etc. whose unit changes caused an impact on changes in productivity in teaching, a unit change in student teacher ratio followed by a unit change in textbooks and laboratory facilities had the greatest impact. On productivity i n consultancy; o f a 11 the variables examined such a s academic qualification, access to computer, telephone, internet facilities, etc., timely delivery of consultant reports whose unit changes caused an impact on changes in productivity in consultancy, a unit change in access to internet facilities followed by a unit change in an access to telephone services had the greatest impact. The following are recommendations based on study findings: To promote productivity in research of academic staff, an equal amount of emphasis should be put on training them to a doctoral degree level and on equipping them with an increased access to internet and research facilities. To promote productivity in teaching, a academic staff who by sheer necessity are forced to teach large classes should be motivated by financial and non-financial rewards. Extra work load should be awarded units for promotion. To promote productivity in consultancy of academic staff there is a need to back up the academic qualifications with relevant consultancy skills such as effective business communication and negotiation. | en_US |
