Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to investigate and analyze the character of colonial cash-crop production, and its relationship to the development of education and medical services rendered by both the government and medical services by both the government and missionary agents between 1920 and 1960. Some historians have come up with the argument that the establishment of education and medical services by the colonial government was meat to facilitate the production of raw materials for export to the metro pole. In the case of medical services and education given by the missionaries, one crucial motive was evangelization. The area for this study comprises of four districts; Mwanza, Kwimba, Ukerewe and Geita which were only two districts, namely, Mwanza and Kwimba. Geita and Ukerewe Districts were created out of Mwanza District around 1950. Chapter one defines the nature of British colonial policies on education, medical services and agriculture. It starts with a short analysis of German colonial policies which laid the foundation for the British colonial era. The second chapter deals with the nature of British policies on education. It identifies such issues as those of the quality, content, and content of colonial education delivery system. The third chapter examines the British colonial medical services delivery system. As regards medical services rendered by the government, the main thrust during this period was to render services mainly to those who were directly concerned with the running of the colonial state. On the other hand, it has been argued out that medical services which were provided by missionaries were meant for conversion. The fourth chapter deals with the relationship between colonial agricultural policies and social services. It is meant to find out the role played by education and medical services in enhancing cash-crop production in this region during the period between 1920 and 1960.
