Abstract
The study employed the triangulation approach to investigate the impact of climate variability on selected socioeconomic indicators, particularly food production, health and education, and how such climate variability and its impact on those indicators was realized and understood among the women living in Jambiani community in Zanzibar. The study used the explanatory, sequential mixed method to collect, analyze and interpret quantitative datasets related to Jambiani communities from the offices of Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), Ministries of Agriculture and Health and Southern District in Zanzibar, as well the qualitative data from the women in Kibigija of the Jambiani communities. The analysis of both statistical and interview data shows that climate variability was imminent in Jambiani communities between 2010 and 2015 and had a negative impact on food production, health and education. It was also noted that women and their families working in the informal sector are more vulnerable to climate variability impacts than women who are working in the formal sector. Furthermore, women working in the informal sector have less knowledge and resources to mitigate or cope with climate variability impacts compared to their counterparts working in the formal sector. The study recommends that for the impact of climate change to make sense to and be a part of people’s social lives, the related initiatives should focus more on human basic needs than on ecological impacts. It is also incumbent that climate changerelated initiatives focus more on women who live in less advantaged communities.
