Abstract
The study investigated the influence of prejudice on inter clan conflicts among the Kuria ethnic group in Tarime Tanzania. It examined the contribution of clan categorization, explored the conceived inter clan stereotypes and finally it examined the relationship between inter clan prejudice and the intention to engage in conflicts. Both theoretical and empirical literatures were reviewed to inform the study. Quantitative and qualitative research approaches were employed to facilitate the study using a cross sectional study design. Data were collected from 248 respondents who included District Administrative Secretary, District Administrative Officer, Division Secretary, Ward Executive Officers, Village Executive Officers, traditional elders and ordinary clans’ members. These were sampled through the use of the purposive, stratified and simple random techniques. Data were obtained through Likert scale, checklists, interviews, focus group discussions guides and documentary review. The data were then analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings revealed that Kuria clan categorization plays a significant role in all matters, and it paves the way for inter clan comparison and competitions and therefore, causes inter clan prejudices and lead to conflicts. It was also found that inter clan stereotypes conceived by clan members distorted inter clan perceptions and contributed immensely to clan conflicts. Lastly, the study found a relationship between inter clan prejudice and intention to engage in conflicts (r=.43, p<.01). It has been recommended that, addressing inter clan conflicts in Tarime needs a multi discipline approach between the government and other stakeholders. These includes inter clan contact, creating inter clan joint venture for cross categorization, education to clan members, establishment of primary courts and inter governmental cooperation between Tanzania and Kenya to strengthen security especially at the border. Lastly based on study findings recommendations for further studies are proposed.
