This study attempted to investigate counseling services as a strategy of enhancing academic achievement of secondary school students in Tanzania, a case of Mbeya City. It focused on the importance of counseling skills towards academic performance among secondary school students. Specifically, the study aimed to find out counseling skills which could be employed by counselors in schools to enhance academic achievement. A sample of 90 respondents from five schools was obtained through purposive sampling procedures and the criterion of good academic performance for students. Data were collected through interviews, documentary review, questionnaires and focus group discussions. The data collected were analysed through the content analysis technique. The findings revealed that students who were given educational counseling services changed behaviourly and were able to perform better in academic aspects. It was also found that, some counselors had no counseling qualifications hence lacked counseling skills to counsel students. Counseling facilities were also inadequate in all the schools. The study recommends for a strong counseling programme to be initiated in schools, employment of qualified school counselors, counselors to be exposed to in-service training, seminars and workshops to equip them with counseling skills and appropriate counseling facilities to be installed in the schools. | en_US |
