Archaeological investigation of ganda ancient settlement, south of sabaki river

A number of studies archaeological which aimed 1 establishing the settlement patterns of Malindi have been undertaken both on the littoral coast and hinterland areas of north of Sabaki River. These studies indicated the presence of EIW, TIW and Swahili settlements, However, these research works left out thoughts of similar ancient settlements on the south of River Sabaki. This study was carried out to investigate Ganda ancient settlement located on the south of Sabaki River. The project aimed at establishing the antiquity of Ganda site and its relationship to the north of Sabaki River. Primary data recovery involved both archaeological surface survey and excavation of in situ artefacts. Deliberate sampling was used to identify and locate cultural materials, Results uncovered PPW, Mohoro and Swahili traditions. Analysis of data revealed that the site was continuously occupied from PPW to Swahili periods. Thus, Ganda is a relatively later settlement compared to north of Sabaki River. These findings sheds light on the archaeological potential of south of Sabaki River and add more information to the existing body of knowledge about the archaeology of Malindi.
