An analysis of teaching and learning situation in community secondary schools in Vunjo east division of Kilimanjaro region.

Abstract

This study analyzed the teaching and learning situation in selected community secondary schools in Vunjo East Division, of Kilimanjaro Region. The study had three specific objectives: To determine the extend of availability of teaching and learning materials in the selected community secondary schools; to examine adequacy and qualification of teachers in the selected community secondary schools; and to evaluate the adequacy of school infrastructure in the community secondary schools, The study was conducted in 10 selected community secondary schools. The respondents were 177 students, 60 teachers, 30 heads of departments, 10 school heads and 10 academic masters/mistresses. The study used questionnaires, interviews and checklist as data collection instruments. The study employed quantitative and qualitative research approach and in particular the descriptive survey design. The findings revealed that the selected community secondary schools are run under acute shortage of teaching and learning materials for example one textbook was shared by more than nine students. Teachers were inadequate and under qualified. Teacher-Student ratio ranged between 1- 83. Majority, 58 percent were diploma holders and 23 per cent were Form six leavers who were teaching as non-licensed teachers in Form I to IV. School infrastructures were inadequate to the extent that only five schools had laboratory buildings with inadequate laboratory equipment. The study recommends that teaching and learning situation should be improved in community secondary schools by improving supply of teaching and learning materials, employing enough qualified teachers and building sufficient school infrastructures so as to enhance desired academic achievements.
