dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the effectiveness of Internet as an agent of socio-economic empowerment among women Sengerema District in Mwanza Region was used as a case for the study. The purpose of this study was to explore the effective use of internet among women in their daily activities as an agency of socio-economic empowerment. The study was both qualitative and quantitative in nature and employed explorative methods to gather descriptive data with 171 respondents using techniques such as questionnaires, interview and focus group discussions. The findings of the study revealed significant disparities in access to and use of internet amongst women based on demographics such as marital status, education levels and age with trend showing that single, more educated and younger women in internet Usage. The study also found that mobile phone is the most used device in accessing the internet more than any other devices such as laptops, desktops and tablets. Most women use internet for social purposes with entertainment information sought more than academic, business and entrepreneurship. Entertainment information searched was more than academic, business and entrepreneurship and other information. The study has found that women face challenges such as poor internet skills, poor infrastructure such as slow internet, intermitted power supply, poor information and lack of privacy and security, irrelevant information and privacy issues. The study recommends improvement in national internet infrastructure and electricity supply, policy and law provisions in dealing with cybercrime, expansion of ICT education and information literacy to all levels of education and investment in structural and systems that will enhance women access to and use of internet as a tool for socio-economic empowerment. | en_US |
