The following study examines the changes which have occured in Tanzanian traditional dance choreography in urban Dar es Salaam, and the relationship of communication to the realities of history, time and space. From the description of the dances and written sources, the study tries to demonstrate that Tanzanian traditional dance choreography has continued to change when performed in urban Dar es Salaam. Moreover, the study endeavours to show that the dances in urban Dar es Salaam have not only changed in their choreography but also in their functions as pedagogical, therapeutic or religious institution. In these developments exhibition has become an important factor for traditional dances. While colonialism and post colonial developments in general have been responsible for choreographic changes, the study argues also that in more recent times there have been two more contradicting influences, i.e Aristotelian outlook and the urge for Authenticity.en_US
