dc.description.abstract | The general objective of this study was to examine the factors behind employee turnover at the African Barrick Gold Mine using Buzwagi Gold Mine in Shinyanga Region of Tanzania as a case study. The study also sought to assess the strategies used by management to combat employee turnover, and the employee perception of the effectiveness of the company’s retention strategies. This study deployed an exploration approach in a case study design The study was conducted in Kahama District of Shinyanga where Buzwagi Gold Mine is located. A sample of 60 respondents from different departments at Buzwagi Gold Mine using purposive sampling was used to generate the necessary data. Current and correct management workers were drafted in the sample. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative data. The study finding show that lack of recognition and appreciation for work performed, insufficient salaries and benefits contributed to job turnover. Other factors were found to be poor supervision and management, lack of promotion and career advancement opportunities, non-involvement in decision making and lack of the feedback mechanism. There were also poor human resource policies and practices, and lack of training and development opportunities. The study therefore recommend for the improvement of employee retention strategies such as better remunerations, proper feedback mechanism, equal treatment between local and expatriate staff and involvement of employees in decision-making to solve the problem of employee turnover. | en_US |
