Abstract
This study examined the Impact of changes of ownership on firms performance in the hotel and tourism industry in Tanzania and factors constraining development of this sector. This exploratory qualitative survey used a combination of methods to collect data including a standardized structured questionnaire with both open and close-ended questions supplemented by face-to face interviews and observation. Twenty respondents participated in this study. These were randomly and purposively selected from randomly selected hotels in Dar es salaam and Arusha. They included both local and foreign staff. Major findings of this study revealed that the tourism and hotel industry contributes to Tanzania`s economic development and is a major source of government revenue and employment opportunities. Furthermore, findings also revealed that privatization has improved the hotel and tourism industry in Tanzania. This was attributed to new capital, technology and new management techniques and a conducive business and policy environment as well as strong government support and its committed. Despite this, respondents also indicated that the hotel and tourism industry lacks trained local expertise, and the also complained about low salaries and unattractive incentives packages for local staff as well as lack of their involvement and participation in decision making. These factors combined have been resulted frustrated and de-motivated workers and poor worker performance and productivity. Based on the findings it is recommended that more local staff should be trained in order to build the needed capacity, expertise. The scheme of services and incentives packages for local staff should be reviewed and the working environment should be improved to boost staff morale and enhance performance performance, productivity and efficiency. In addition, local staff should be given the opportunity to buy shares in the organization in order to strength local entrepreneurship. Moreover, the Government should work closely together in the development and marketing of Tourism destination in the country. Areas for future research are also suggested.
