Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyse the factors affecting the use of participatory teaching and learning methods in Kiswahili language in Ward Secondary Schools in Kinondoni District. Four objectives was guided by this study; firstly was to identify participatory methods used by teachers in teaching Kiswahili language; secondly to find out the extent on the use participatory techniques in teaching Kiswahili language; thirdly was to identify the materials/resources used in teaching and learning of Kiswahili language; and lastly to analyse the factors affecting the use of participatory techniques in teaching and learning Kiswahili language. The study used qualitative and quantitative approaches in gathering data from respondents. The respondents were, subject teachers, academic deans, school inspectors and form three students. The methods of data collection were interviews, Focus Group Discussions, observation checklist and documentary reviews. The findings revealed that teachers in this study used question and answers methods in teaching and learning Kiswahili language. The use of participatory techniques was affected by many factors, including scarcity of teaching and learning resources, overloaded curriculum, overcrowded students in the classroom and unconducive learning environment for students. The study concluded that there is a need for teachers to use participatory methods regardless of the challenges that are faced in implementing them. The study recommends that, Tanzania government should ensure that the provision of appropriate teaching and learning materials is done with respect to the students’ needs and interests such as text books, reference books, teaching aids and computers
