Abstract
The study examines the effects of the EAC Customs Union on Tanzania Trade performance. The three objectives examined included, reasons for existence of non tariff barriers up to now, the problems that hinders the implementation of the Customs Union and the effects of export after the implementation of Customs union. The information was collected by administering 50 questionnaires to the export companies and the business community organizations. The data collected from the questionnaire were coded using the SPSS software package and the information was analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The findings from this study were as follows. First, the findings revealed that the non tariff barriers are still persistent in the Customs union. Secondly, the findings show there are still a lot of challenges that face the implementation of the customs union. Thirdly, the findings revealed that the export trend of Tanzania has increased since the establishment of the customs union The implication from the findings explains why there is a need to strengthen the integration for further trade benefits. Hence, the study recommends that there increase in transparency of the member states, elimination of the internal barriers and the members to put forward the interests of the East African community rather than of individual countries
