This study investigated the effectiveness of school inspection in enhancing the quality of secondary education in Ilala Municipality in Dar-es-salaam region. The study assessed the competence of Secondary School inspectors (SSIs), evaluated SSIs guidance in selecting Instructional Materials (IMs) to Secondary School Teachers (SSTs), examined Professional Support Development (PSD) to SSTs, and identified challenges faced SSIs. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research approach. The sample included 106 respondents, 01-Zonal Chief School Inspector (ZCSI), 10-Secondary School Inspectors, 01-District Education Officer (DEO), 06- Ward Education Coordinators (WECs) 08- Head of schools (HoSs) and 80- Secondary School Teachers (SSTs). The findings showed that, all Secondary School Inspectors (SSIs) were qualified and experienced but were ineffective in supporting SSTs in selecting Instructional Materials (IMs), providing Professional Support Development (PSD). Also, Secondary School Inspectors lacked physical, fiscal and human resources. The study concludes that, SSIs should be competent in school inspection and properly recruited and trained. They also, should provide proper guidance in selecting IMs to SSTs and provide adequate Professional Support Development to SSTs a well as SSIs should have enough resources for effective school inspection. The study recommends for proper recruitment and training of SSIs together with the provision of their necessary resources for effective school inspection and support to SSTs. It is recommended for further similar study to pre-primary schools and teacher’s colleges to find out the quality of education provided in these areasen_US
