Abstract

This study assessed tour operators and promotion of tourism in Tanzania, a case study of Dar es Salaam. The main objective of this study was to investigate why tour operators are not fully indulged in promotion of tourism in Tanzania. The specific objectives were; to investigate awareness of tour operators in promoting tourism, to investigate the involvement of tour operators in promotion of tourism and to investigate the activities done by tour operators in promoting tourism,The study was descriptive in nature and therefore qualitative research approaches were utilized. The study involved a total of 35 respondents at Tour Operators. Data were collected by use of questionnaires, interview and documentary review. The findings of this study revealed that most of tour operators lack marketing skills and marketing expenses hence they were using less costing advertising methods to promote tourism activities which can be done in Tanzania. This has resulted into less promoting awareness at Tour Operators. The study also revealed that less involvement in promotion of tour operators has caused reduction of tourism performance.This study concluded that, in order for tourism in Tanzania to develop, then should make sure that there is effective promotion by tour operators. Also tour operators must be involved in promotion activities since will enable them to increase market share hence improve tourism development in Tanzania.
