Abstract
In order to improve self sufficiency in food and other agricultural products, Tanzania, in the context of its national development plans and priorities is taking measures to accelerate food and agricultural production. Socialist countries of Eastern Europe China and DPR of Korea are contributing to the development of agriculture in Tanzania through agrarian foreign trade; the supply of agricultural means of production and complete installations, the creation of agricultural projects, making new land areas suitable for cultivation the development of irrigation and the agricultural productive forces. The presentation in this study is divided in five chapters. Chapter one gives the general theoretical framework of the study, The chapter presents some general comment on the significance of agricultural commodities in foreign trade and its impact on economic development. Chapter Two gives an overview of the development of the food and agricultural sector in Tanzania. Agriculture is the backbone of the Tanzania economy. The social and economic development of Tanzania in general and the people in particular depends on the development of agricultural production. Chapter Three discusses the trade relations between Tanzania and the socialist countries of Eastern Europe, China and DPR of Korea as regards agra-food and other related products. Chapter Four looks into the socialist countries-assisted agricultural projects. It reviews the agricultural technology essentially the agricultural mechanization and irrigation. The pattern of mechanization and its evolution is evaluated relative to the adaptability, adoptability and resource constraints. The projects are discussed in relation to the constraints affecting capacity development, maintenance and utilization as a potential for agricultural development. Chapter Five, summarises, conclusions and recommendations.
