dc.description.abstract | The study investigates the empirical determinants of poverty in Tanzania using cross section data from National Panel Survey 2010/2011. The study focuses on consumption function since poverty is defined as lack of basic needs of which food is included. Four functional forms were estimated based on this data, with per capita daily food expenditure as the dependent variable and a set of economic and demographic variables as explanatory variables. These include per capita daily total expenditure, per capita daily nonfood expenditure, and gender of household head, household size and place of residence. All variables are statistically significant and positively correlated with per capita food expenditure thus negatively correlated to poverty. The findings show that large size households are highly affected by poverty. The results also show that food expenditure is very low for rural households compared to urban households. Their income is also low compared to urban households. Therefore rural households are affected more by poverty than urban households. Gender also is significant in poverty analysis where by women are mostly affected by poverty than men. Therefore, the government effort should be increased to solve challenges in rural areas. These include: to improve social services such as water and electricity, advancement in agricultural sector, infrastructures such as roads and availability of reliable market for their products. Also it should put more emphasis on issues of gender equality and family planning. | en_US |
