Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating effectiveness of self-evaluation in Performance Appraisal in short-term contractual employment in Tanzania, using the Consolidated Holding Corporation (CHC) as a case study. The objective of the study was to investigate the attitude of employees to the effectiveness of self-evaluation and identify problems facing the implementation of self-evaluation performance appraisal process at the CHC. Requisite data was collected through the use of self-administered questionnaires and documentary reviews. In all, all the 59 respondents took part in the questionnaire survey, the primary data collection and 46 of them returned them, hence representing a 92 percent return rate. The quantifiable data collected were analysed with the help of Word Excel and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. The study findings show that the majority of CHC employees were satisfied with the current performance appraisal system in use; however, a number of issues hindered the effectiveness of self-evaluation in Performance Appraisal (PA) in short-term contractual employment in the organisation. The shortcoming were evident in the leadership support to the appraisal system, training of staff on matters linked to PA, and awareness of the employees of the organisation’s on PA policy document. Nevertheless, the employees of CHC had a positive attitude towards self-evaluation in PA in short-term contractual employment despite the weaknesses in the system. Based on the study findings, it is recommended that the self-evaluation component in PA should be improved or modified to capture and incorporate the desired need of both parties in the exercise. Employees should be involved in developing a PA policy which is friendly user. Management should also provide training to its staff on PA and support the PA process.
