dc.description.abstract | This dissertation evaluated how effective the ESIAs were in trying to mitigate environmental impacts of mining projects in Ratta Village in Moroto District. Three specific research objectives were investigated: The extent of implementation of mitigation measures; Their effectiveness and the frequency of monitoring of implementation of mitigation measures as reflected in ESMPs of mining projects in Moroto District. Mixed research design methods namely quantitative and qualitative were used for collecting and analyzing the data. The researcher purposively selected DAO marble as a case study and the project ESMPs, environmental officers, people staying in the neighbouring communities to the mine and factory together with observations at the site provided the data. SPSS (version 20 for windows, USA) was used for data analysis. The data collected was descriptively analysed and the following results were identified; The ESIA mitigations were not effective in protecting the environment from the impacts of mining activities. The majority of the recommended mitigation measures have not been implemented and the ones implemented were those with less economic implications on the project. Monitoring and follow up of implementation of ESIA mitigation measures is lacking because of institutional failures at all levels. These findings suggest the need to strengthen enforcement strategy, emphasize ESIA monitoring and follow up at all levels as a measure of effectiveness of mitigations. | en_US |
