Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate motivational strategies employed by TBL and the impact they have on the employee efficiency, factors that hamper employee efficiency as well as views on increasing employee efficiency. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam at TBL, and data were collected using questionnaires, interviews as well as participant observations. Findings of the study on the motivational strategies at TBL showed that most of the respondents were not satisfied with the salary that they obtained. The amount of work which employees did was greater compared to the salary that they got. Employees worked for more hours per day in order to fill the gap of staff who had been retrenched .The study found that respondents got a number of allowances from their employer, such as house allowance, medical, transport, training opportunities. However, not all the employees benefited from these allowances, specifically house and transport allowances. Participation in decision-making related to the affairs that affected the wellbeing of the staff, as well as provision of training opportunities, were found not to have been given such an opportunity. Moreover, there was no printed scheme of service to determine promotion, but decisions were taken based on habitual practices, which were discriminatory. Findings of this study showed that as employees were not adequately motivated, their efficiency was not high, and so the management used other methods to induce compliance among staff, including close supervision, and henceforth boost performance. Findings of this study revealed that there were inadequacies of salary, poor working environment, lack of training opportunity as we as low level of participation in decision-making. This study recommends increasing monetary and non-monetary incentive packages to staff, as well as involving staff in decision making on matters that affect day to day work.
