Abstract

This study attempts to examine the problems and prospects of socialist development in Moshi district. It tries to see how socio-economic local conditions i the district affect the implementation of the Ujamaa Vijijini policy. The field work was conducted in April and May 1975. Data collection was mainly by participant observation method. Informal interviews were conducted. In addition files at the district office, TANU branches, villages and co-operative primary society ware used to get quantitative data related to the survey. This dissertation is a result of the help of many people who participated at various stages of its preparation without whose help in one way or another this work would not have been completed in the present from. I would like to express my gratitude to the peasants of Moshi district who contributed most of what is contained in this report; to party and government leaders in the district who assisted at various levels in the study; to Kivukoni College and the Kilimanjaro Native Co-operative Union Ltd.
