Abstract
Management of resources is very crucial to every work organization. Nevertheless human resources rank the first and this is essentially on the fact that it is human resource that makes possible the existence and performance of work organizations by organizing other resources (land, capital and machines) into best effect. This study was aimed at probing information on star motivation on the belief that motivating employees and job satisfaction are central to understanding organizational effectiveness. This study was based on the case study approach focused at UDSM whereby a sample of 108 respondents were conveniently selected and interviewed. By the way of assessing the components of incentives and motivation, the study found that both the extrinsic (material) and intrinsic (non material) components do influence employees' job satisfaction. The study further reveals that the employees however were greatly in favour of material components compared to intrinsic. The study found that motivation is poorly handled at UDSM and this Proof was achieved by comparing several theories on motivation and the actual practices at UDSM. The research/study found that there was no policy on incentives and motivation something that had led to undesired working morale to supporting staffs at UDSM. The main recommendation of the study is that UDSM should develop a comprehensive policy on incentives and motivation emanating from the stakeholders (employees). Management of UDSM should also solicit more sources of revenue to make the policy implementable.
