ICT training for employees in work organization: a case of Tanga cement company limited

In recent years information and communication technology (ICT) has become one of the major pre requisites for the operations and success of work organizations. As information technology (IT) becomes an integral part of more jobs, more employees need the skills to use information technology effectively. Clearly, the most widely perceived trend today is the increased need for computer skills training. This study aimed at evaluating the perceived importance of ICT training to employees in work organizations taking a case study of Tanga Cement Company Limited (TCCL). The focus of the study was mainly on three dimensions related to ICT (i.e. ICT training programs, systems acceptance and utilizations and ICT training methods) and their influence on employees’ work performance both individually and in combination. A structured questionnaire with Likert scales measurements was used to gather data from 103 respondents all of them being employees of TCCL who were obtained through purposive sampling. Analysis of data was done by the use of regression analysis technique and the findings established that ICT training programs do not have a significant impact on employees work performance. Most of the employees who use computers at TCCL have a belief that so long they routinely accomplish their tasks, they do not need training. On the other hand, systems acceptance and utilization and ICT training methods were found to have a significant impact on employees’ performance. Therefore, these findings may prompt a call for further research to find out why ICT training to employees in manufacturing organizations might seem to be not very important while the same employees do accept the system and appreciate the training methods.
