dc.description.abstract | This study investigates stylistic elements in Bongo movies. It was guided by the following objectives: (i) to identify the stylistic elements frequently used in Bongo movies; (ii) to examine the ways mise-en-scene and sound elements are used in building the stories in movies; and (iii) to explore whether or not these stylistic elements make Bongo movies distinctly Tanzanian. The study used the Formalist theory as articulated by Russian school of literary criticism which states that any artwork has its form according to where it belongs. It used descriptive research design to determine the use of stylistic elements dominant in Bongo movies. Purposive sampling technique was used to select participants for key informants and focus group discussion to fill gaps in the understanding of stylistic elements used in Bongo movies. The study noted that Bongo movie phenomenon is relatively new in Tanzania and that lighting, setting, music, dialogue, costumes, make-ups and props although commonly used elements they lack professional considerations. It observed that Bongo filmmakers generally lack skills in filmmaking. Also, it showed it is difficult to distinctly identify features that make Bongo movie unique stylistically. The study finds that in the 1990s to mid-2000s Bongo movies looked more-or-less similar to Nigerian films. However, this has changed and filmmakers arc developing their own. Finally, it recommends that producers and directors be well trained on mise-en-scene and sound elements and improve their creativity in script writing, use correct stylistic elements, editing and production of the film. | en_US |
