Abstract
The study aimed to assess challenges faced by entrepreneurs with disability in the business undertakings using cases of entrepreneurs in Dar es Salaam city. Specifically, the study aimed at assessing challenges faced by entrepreneurs with disability in accessing finance, and business formalizing. Moreover, the study assessed challenges in accessing business development services and from people’s attitudes, perceptions and myths towards entrepreneurs with disability. Data was collected by means of both structured and semi-structured questionnaires and FGDS.A total of 74 respondents participated in the study using survey research method. And data was analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The study found that entrepreneurship skills were relatively inadequate to both people with disability themselves and other disability organizations (e.g. support services, social enterprise etc.) in the study area. It was found that entrepreneurs with disabilities in study area have less human, social and financial capital than other entrepreneurs. As for the access to finance, entrepreneurs with disabilities were found to face challenges starting from the very nature of their businesses being micro and informal with no growth potential, they also lacked property that could be pledged as collateral. Entrepreneurs with disabilities also face a number of challenges in formalizing their businesses, challenges vary from lack of awareness and cumbersome processes to the very attitude of some of the officials towards entrepreneurs with disabilities in general. Entrepreneurs with disability need to be developed systematically and progressively for entrepreneurial skills, marketing, financial capital perspective and social practical consideration. Moreover, this study justifies the theme of the research why there is a great challenge to entrepreneurs with disabilities as well as gap between the disabled entrepreneurship and the capital resources for running their business activities. Basing on the findings, this will add knowledge to other researchers on matters concerning entrepreneurs with disabilities. Lastly, this study was portraying good features to other academicians who like to use it as a reference on their studies or as a source of material for further studies.
