dc.description.abstractThis study used the case of the Quality Assurance Bureau (QAB) in the University of Dar Es Salaam (UDSM) to assess the role of internal quality assurance units in improving the quality of education. Specifically, the study aimed at examining the nature of quality assurance process and evaluated the M & E tools employed for quality assurance process. It also assessed the perceptions of key stakeholders about quality assurance mechanisms and investigated the utilization of quality assurance information. The study was guided by qualitative case study approach and employed in-depth interview, focus group discussions, and participant observation. The study found that the success of internal quality assurance units hinges on professional enhancement in QAB operational procedures and the personnel, monitoring practices, students’ awareness on quality assurance systems, timing and administration of students’ course-evaluation process that improve the quality of education provided. Clear understanding of the concept of quality among stakeholders influences well-functioning of quality assurance systems. The study revealed an ambiguous conception of quality assurance procedures between the QAB staffs and lecturers. Utilization of quality assurance information in QAB was influenced by dissemination process of quality assurance findings, financial resources, human resources and bureaucratic complexities that affect the implementation of reports’ findings. The study recommends professional enhancement into QAB operational procedures and appropriate training programmes to be instituted to QAB personnel. However, QAB needs to be supplied with capacity to fully undertake its responsibilities independently. This will embark regular operation that will in still a robust quality assurance system in in Higher Learning Institutions.en_US
