Abstract

The major aim of this research, which was an opinion survey, was to find out the possibilities and constraints of introducing Family Life Education into the school curriculum in Tanzania.It was found that the home as an agency of Family Life Education is unsatisfactory, and that the majority of the people want Family Life Education to be introduced into the school curriculum, particularly between Primary school Standard Seven and Secondary school Form Four.This dissertation begins with an introductory chapter in which the aims and intended contribution of the research are outlined, Furthermore, a definition of Family Life Education in the context of the Tanzanian situation is proposed. The methods of data collection and data processing used in this survey, in which a stratified sample of 818 respondents in Kisarawe, Ngara, and Dar es Salaam was involved, are described in chapter two. The problem investigated in this research is discussed and validated in chapter three, in which the present ways of transmitting Family Life Education, and the need to supplement interfamily education through another agency, are discussed. The attitudes towards the introduction of this education into another agency, the school, are discussed in chapter four. It is found that many of the supporters of the idea of introducing Family Life Education into the school curriculum see this move as a problem preventive or problem-solving measure. The major problems that the people have in mind, and their bearings on Family Life Education, are discussed in chapter five. In this discussion, some of the possible topics for inclusion in a Family Life Education programme are implied. The controversial topics are discussed in chapter six. Since all conclusions and recommendations are made within the chapters themselves, the concluding chapter, which is chapter seven, is mainly a summary of the main findings, conclusions and suggestions.
