Abstract

The focus of this study was to explore and examine the Role of non Governmental Organization (NGOs) in fighting against HIV/AIDS. It was conducted in Kibera Slums in Kibera division, Nairobi, Province-Kenya. The study used a number of data collection methods including surveys, questionnaires, observation and documentary analysis. The study showed that all the HIV/AIDS NGOs in Kibera slums worked in the front line of the campaign to arrest and reverse the impact of HIV/AIDS in Kibera slums. Unfortunately, their approaches and/ or methods made them have small impact since they treated poverty and HIV/AIDS in isolation. The study revealed that HIV/AIDS NGOs in Kibera were doing a commendable job. Their tasks were however compounded by a number of difficulties. These difficulties included, lack of accounting for their funds, they lacked qualified HIV/AIDS counseling personnel, had un-submitted returns/accounts, attained relations with the government among other problems. Owing to these problems, the HIV/AIDS NGOs in Kibera slums have hardly managed to address the broader social determinants of HIV/AIDS and to reach their clients with efficiency and efficacy. The study revealed further that although poverty and HIV/AIDS were closely related, most NGOs treated these twin.
