This study investigated the level of community participation in the malaria programme in Greater Kwale district in Kenya. The study objectives were mainly three, namely: examine community`s participation in the process of planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in malaria programme, assess the perceptions of MoH towards community participation and lastly, identifying the obstacles to community participation in the process of planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the malaria programme. The study was descriptive survey using 384 households Interviews were used as a method of collecting data. The primary data were obtained from key informants from nine public health workers and three DOMC personnel. Their perceptions of National Malaria Strategy and how the community participated in the malaria programme were assessed. Two Focus Group Discussions (one for males, other for females) were used to supplement the data from the household survey. Secondary data gave a wide perspective of the study. STATA Version 9.2 was used to analyse the quantitative data on the levels of community participation while qualitative data was analysed using thematic framework analysis. It was revealed that community participated in the implementation level on the programme activities, but not in health benefits of the implementation level. They also did not participate in the planning and monitoring level since the DOMC were the ones who made decisions and came up with the activities. It was concluded that there was need for reviewing the National Malaria Programme by involving the communities in all levels of the programme to ensure effective and sustainability of the malaria programme.en_US
