Abstract
This study investigated the benefits and challenges of of implementing total quality Management in the manufacturing industry in Tanzania. The study approached through an in-depth literature study of both theoretical literature and empirical questionnaire was used as a tool to help solicit information from the individual employee of firms and institution. The study established, among other things that implementation of TQM will lead to increased productivity, organizational learning and innovation, improved competitiveness of manufacturing firms in Tanzania, and better ways of managing and developing their workforce. The realization of these benefits will also help to revive and promote the stagnant and poorly performing manufacturing industry in Tanzania leading to more exports, foreign exchange earnings, more investment and employment, better standards of living and national development. However, to realize these benefits firms must overcome several challenges which include: cultural resistance; governmental intervention; inadequate resources; low level of education and training; and lack of competent management talent. Among several issues; the study suggested the need for effective government role in promoting and supporting quality improvement initiatives and the need for further empirical research to focus on the study of causal ambiguity between culture and TQM implementation. implementing Total Quality the problem studies.
