Abstract

This study sought to investigate the Translation Loss in Hymns Translated from English into Swahili Language by focusing on three issues, namely identification of translation loss in the hymns translated from English into Swahili; explanation of the possible factors for translation loss, and suggestion possible ways to prevent translation loss. The study employed a case study research design and used the Seventh Day Adventist Church Hymnal as a case study. However, qualitative approach and some elements of quantitative approach were used especially on table analysis. The study used cluster sampling and simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected through documentary review and questionnaires and were analysed by using comparative analysis technique. The researcher selected 8 hymns from which 15 verses were identified and included in data collection instruments especially questionnaires. From the 15 verses, respondents were asked to identify those which were overtranslated, undertranslated or mistranslated. The findings show that there are translation problems in hymns translated from English into Swahili. These are caused by adherence to poetic requirement, linguistic incompetence, lack of adhering to translation principles, and lack of translation materials and reference sources. Other causes include lack of translation knowledge and skills, linguistic differences between the languages involved, and lack of time to review and edit the translation work. Finally, the study provides suggestions on how to manage the identified translation problems. Such suggestions include avoiding self-interest, being linguistically competent, adhering to translation principles, having enough time to translate and review the translated work, using different material and reference sources. The study also proposes further research on other religious translations like ethnic community language hymns.
