| dc.description.abstract | My briefing as I understand, it, is to identify a broad based theme which could provide a target on which a highly motivated aid mission can focus its efforts on a sustained programme over the next fifteen years* The overriding issue is how Tanzania will use its land over that period. The plans it makes now will decide whether at the turn of the century Tanzania will be a politically and economically stable nation able to feed itself and provide its citizens with life of a modest but satisfying quality. This fact is appreciated in Tanzania, and much planning is taking place. But the intensity of the problem is not sufficiently appreciated, as a result of which the plans fall far short of requirements. A phased approach to the problem requires two priority moves, a re—assessment of the gravity of the problem, and the creation of awareness in the leadership and the people of the fact that a major problem exists, but that with proper planning and appropriate action it can be solved, Whilst these two processes are developing, present plans for land use will go ahead, and their practical application will reveal both their soundness as plans and the difficulties in their execution. Thus in the light of awareness of research and of application, adjustments can be made to assure the achievement of the long term goal. | en_US |
