| dc.description.abstract | The objective of the study was to investigate the processes of erosions accretion and sediment transportation as they occur along Kunduchi beach and propose methods of combating them. These processes are analysed in relation to wave action, the effect of the Monsoon winds tides and the geology of the area. Findings indicate that accretion generally takes place between the months of October and December and towards the end of January to March. These are transitional periods for the Monsoon winds are changing direction from the N.E. in March/ April to S.E. and vice versa during October/November. Erosion takes place once the direction of approach of the Monsoons has been stabilised though it appears to be more severe when the Monsoons blow from the S .E .The building of groyne perpendicular to the coastline at intervals of 50 metres is the best conservation measure recommended. Others include the building of a sea wall, injection of sand from other localities, planting of deep rooted vegetation and the building of a breakwater. Further research lasting longer is recommended. Finally the establishment of a body solely responsible for beach protection is recommended. The study is divided into 5 Chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction and outline of the study. Chapter 2 outlines wave action, winds, tides and the geology of the area as factors which influence the coastal processes. Chapter 3 analyses the coastal processes along Kunduchi Beach. Chapter 4 reviews the conservation measures that can be effected along Kunduchi Beach. Chapter 5 is a summary and conclusions for the study are drawn. | en_US |
