Abstract

This study is about the role of mass media in the environmental protection under globalization challenges. The focus is in the print media in Tanzania that we believe are type of medium which would help the majority of Tanzanians who are living either in die rural or urban areas to understand issues about the environment The study involves four dailies paper in Tanzania of which two are printed in English. The papers included the Daily News, The Guardian Mtanzania and Mwananchi. It is believed that in order to involve the public in the campaign for environmental protection, media has to play its role effectively so as to influence the mass. Unfortunately, coverage of environmental news in Tanzania is still poor, even though environmental protection has now become a global issue. The study was conducted by distributing questionnaires, conducting interviews to personalities and by going through several newspapers as a way of data collection. As a revolt, it was found that media in Tanzania is still in dilemma of reporting issues on environmental protection under globalization. The study recommends that the media orgjfcnizatiora, journalism institutions and Journalists' Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) establish effort to make environment u daily reportage issue for the better of the nation.
