Challenges towards poverty reduction in Tanzania became major concern to the government as it tries to put effort to ensure full poverty reduction is achieved. This study aimed at assessing the contribution of fishery resources to poverty reduction to coast residents in Dar es Salaam. The study employed a methodology of multidimensional of poverty approach to identify variables that have contributed to well-being of fishermen community. The Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) poverty index was established to measure the poverty level of fishermen. In addition the Tobit Regression Model was used to examine variables that influences fisherman’s income and the contribution to poverty reduction. This study examines the contribution of fishery resources to poverty reduction to Dar es Salaam fishermen. The key findings show that 90.2 percent of fishermen were non-poor. The estimated poverty gap is 2.7 percent low compared to 6.7 percent for Mainland Tanzania. In addition Tshs 460,000 per month is needed to be transferred to poor fisherman to bring up to basic needs poverty line and reduce poverty. The major factors found to influence positively the income and poverty reduction among fishermen include: fishing gears used, fishing gear capacity, number of fishing years and the amount of fish harvest during high season. Thus fishery resources have a great chance to improve welfare of the society and reduce poverty.en_US
