This study investigated the occurrences of conjunctions in Kiswahili novels, whereby the conjunctions were analysed in terms of their frequencies and percentages in order to discover the most frequently occurring conjunctions in the novels. The cohesive and non-cohesive conjunctions were analysed separately due to the fact that these conjunctions have different function in the texts. The cohesive conjunctions connect clauses. The study was comparative, where two selected novels were compared. The data analysed were collected from two selected novels, Almasi za Bandia by Chachage (1991) and Njozi Iliyopotea by Mung’ong’o (1980). The study chose the first chapter and some paragraphs of the second chapter from the two novels. The principle suggested by Haliday and Hassan (1976) was followed in the analysis. In analyzing conjunction cohesion, all sentences were numbered, all conjunctive elements identified and bolded. Calculations were made to find out the frequencies and percentages of each type of conjunction for comparison purposes. The cohesive conjunctions were sorted out in order to determine the usage rates of the cohesive conjunctions in each novel. The findings revealed that some types and sub-types of conjunctions are used most frequently while others are used less frequently or are not used at all in the selected Kiswahili novels.en_US
