The prevalence of child abuse and neglect is a major problem in Tanzania. Despite the large number of registered Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to curb the problem, Orphans and Vulnerable Children still lack the required social care and support. This study was therefore aimed at assessing the capacity of local NGOs in raising project funds in order to improve the welfare of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Ilala District. A holistic multiple case study design was employed using semi-structured interviews with local NGO leaders. The interviews were centered on organizational practices, characteristics and external factors influencing fundraising performance in local NGOs. Eleven local NGOs were involved in the study. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using cross-case synthesis. Research findings show that different local NGOs take different initiatives such as grant applications, fundraising events, personal solicitation, forming alliances, internet fundraising and the use of solicitation letter, traditional mailing and telephone fundraising to mobilize financial resources. However, these efforts have been fruitless for the majority of local NGOs except for the few cases. This is largely attributed to limited capacity in financial resources, human resources and infrastructures. This further makes it hard for local NGOs to adopt and explore the external environment. Based on the revealed findings, this study concludes that the majority of local NGOs dealing with service delivery to Orphans and Vulnerable Children are small in size with limited capacity to explore effectively the available funding opportunities. Hence, there is a need for capacity building through regular trainings to improve the ability of local NGOs to access donor funding, and effectively provide social care and support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children.en_US
