| dc.description.abstract | This study examined and analysed the two novels, Ndunguru’s The Lion of Yola (2004) and Mwaffisi’s Distant Destination (2002) for manifestations of success or failure of leadership exercised at different levels during implementation of the Ujamaa ideology in Tanzania. The study used a Historical Criticism approach, a literary approach, which advocates that literary works have a close relationship to actual events that take place at a given social, economic and political history of a country, hence, its sanction of use in a study of literary and non-fiction materials. Data for the study were obtained from the analysis of the novels under study and other non-fiction texts that proved beneficial for the study. Secondary data were extracted from critical works such as books, journal articles and internet resources among others. The study revealed that both novels, The Lion of Yola and Distant Destination, portray success of leadership in implementation of the Ujamaa ideology during its heyday. These success elements go along with failure of leadership as well. The leadership depicted in both novels is the ‘second generation’ in the sense that it came after the first and evaluates the past leadership to avoid mistakes committed in the first phase when implementing Ujamaa ideology in its second phase. The study recommends further studies on leadership during the Ujamaa era to involve also other Tanzanian literary texts as the present study dealt with only two texts. | en_US |
